It is the question we hear most when someone books for the first time: "Should I have BIAB or gel?" Both are cured under a lamp, both come out glossy, and on the day they can look almost the same. The difference is in what they are made to do.
What gel polish is
Gel polish is a thin layer of colour. It goes on like nail varnish, sets hard under the lamp and stays chip-free for around two weeks. It does not add strength to your nails. It simply sits on top and looks good.
A gel manicure suits you if your nails are already in decent shape, you like changing colour often, and you want something quick. At the studio it takes about 45 minutes.
What BIAB is
BIAB stands for Builder In A Bottle. It is a thicker, slightly flexible builder gel that is brushed on and shaped to give your nail a stronger structure. Think of it as a protective layer that lets your own nail grow underneath without bending, peeling or snapping.
Because it is built up rather than painted on, it takes a little longer, about 75 minutes for a new set, and it lasts three to four weeks. Instead of taking it off each time, you come back for an infill: the gap at the base is filled and the shape is balanced again.
Which one is right for you?
Ask yourself what you want from your nails over the next few months.
- You want longer, stronger natural nails. Choose BIAB. It is the best option for nails that peel, split or never get past your fingertips.
- You bite your nails and want to stop. BIAB again. The firm layer makes biting harder, and seeing your nails grow is a good reason to leave them alone.
- You change your colour every couple of weeks. Gel polish is easier to swap and costs a little less.
- You have a holiday or an occasion coming up. Either works. If you want it to last the whole trip, BIAB gives you more time.
Can you have colour and nail art on BIAB?
Yes. BIAB comes in clear, milky and nude shades, and it can be finished in any gel colour on top. French tips, chrome and hand-painted designs all go over it just as they do over gel. Have a look at the nail art options to see what can be added.
What about your nail health?
Neither one damages your nails when it is put on and taken off properly. Most damage comes from picking or peeling the product off, which takes layers of your natural nail with it. If you want a break, book a removal so it can be soaked off gently.
If you are still unsure, book whichever feels closest and talk it through with Asteria at the start of your appointment. She can look at your nails and tell you what will last best on them.
